ABOUT COMBO NO. 4
The title of the exhibition, “ Combo No. 4” takes its name from the ubiquitous Chinese takeout restaurants populating the American landscape. Prominent, yet often dismissed the Chinese takeout restaurant becomes symbolic of the immigrant experience and serves as a space to explore ideas of class, assimilation and xenophobia. In Chinese the number four is taboo and associated with death, similarly Chow’s paintings often center around ideas of Chinese mythology and the afterlife. The resulting works are painted on paper, employing a mesmerizing neon palette of saturated colors and dense patterns that give way to Chow’s compelling images.
